17th March 2023
Happy Birthday to our patron of Kirkham Henry Youth Ballet, former pupil Samantha Raine.

On this day 32 years ago Sam was offered a place at The Royal Ballet School on her 11th Birthday. Gaining a contract with the company age 17, rising to the rank of first soloist before side stepping to take over the role of Ballet Mistress in 2012 , making Sam the youngest Ballet mistress of The Royal Ballet in history.

The company made a new role of senior ballet mistress for Sam and now senior Répétiteur.

Recently Sam received a wonderful hand written letter off the Chief Executive of The Royal Opera House congratulating her on 25 years of service at The Royal Ballet Company.

It goes without saying we at KH are extremely proud of Sam’s achievements and wish Sam a very happy birthday.

Thanks to ‘Friends’ for our lovely community T-Shirts, bright enough for our visually impaired dancers and also chosen for the Parkinson’s colours. We can’t wait to get our removable ramps to help with our wheelchair dancers accessibility.

We are proud to announce we have been successful in retaining our Makaton Friendly status.

Miss Joanne head of our Makaton communications, seen here with our new certificate and window sticker.

Today over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech.

In addition to children and adults with communication and learning difficulties and the community around them – for example, teachers, health professionals, friends, public service bodies etc. Makaton is increasingly used by the general public to aid communication.

We are so thrilled to inform you all of Josh’s utterly fantastic news, here’s Josh letting you all know, we’re sure you’ll join us in wishing Josh all the very best for his future.

Hello, Josh here! I’m very excited to say I’m going to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama to study acting this autumn! I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact I’ll be living and studying in London this year. It’s a privilege to go to a prestigious drama school and an absolute dream of mine and I want to thank Kirkham Henry for all the opportunities, skills and knowledge they have provided me with in order to help me to this point. Unlike many others I haven’t been at Kirkham Henry since I was 3 or 4, I joined relatively recently in 2018 after I did my first RYT show! I had seriously caught the performance bug at that point and am so glad I took up dancing, singing and drama lessons at KH, I can’t understate how much they improved me as a rounded performer. I’ve made so many friendships at Kirkham Henry and am very grateful for the doors that they have opened up for me such as performing in MNMT’s pantos and doing acting lessons with Miss Audrie, who I owe an incredible amount to, helping me with my auditions and my acting over the past few years and without, I probably wouldn’t be where I am now. So yeah, I’m certainly going to miss my Kirkham Henry Saturdays and whilst writing this, all the memories I’ve had over the years are coming back to me. I wish you all the best, and hope to see you soon!

What a fabulous KH Saturday- We not only made £96 on our Easter Egg tombola, we also received a cheque for £600 from MNMT after their collection at the end of Cinderella pantomime.

We were busy making videos to go off with fundraising applications which hopefully shows just what our famous KH Saturdays are about.

Congratulations to Maddie Lund who has been offered a place at Elmhurst Ballet School starting September 2023, which has highly-esteemed association with Birmingham Royal Ballet.

As well as privileged access to the company’s Artistic Director and his team, their association also gives students significant performance opportunities to work with the Birmingham Royal Ballet - both at the Birmingham Hippodrome and on tour.

Founded in Camberley, Surrey in 1923, Elmhurst was one of the UK’s first vocational dance schools.

In 2004, the school moved to its purpose-built new home in Edgbaston, Birmingham forming a close association with Birmingham Royal Ballet, formerly Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet.

Maddie won many awards including the most outstanding award for classical dance at our most recent stage dance festival.

Maddie’s Mum Carmen states -
“It has been Maddie’s dream from a young age to attend a vocational ballet school. We must thank everyone at Kirkham Henry who have nurtured her talent and given her the drive and skills to pursue this.
Maddie has been attending Kirkham Henry classes since the age of two so i know she will miss attending and the friends she has made there.”

In the meantime Maddie will continue her training at KH with her friends and we wish Maddie all the very best for her future.

Worth the wait -

After taking their last few ballet exams by having to film in our studios, we’re thrilled that the vocational Royal Academy of Dance ballet exams are back with ‘a real live’ examiner as the little ones say, instead of sending off the filmed exam to the Academy.

Thank you to Northern Ballet for hosting the exam sessions, to RAD of course and to our pupils whose hard work we hope will lead to positive results. Well done everyone.
